Fluoride applications

Fluoride is a material which helps in hardening the enamel which is less prone to decay. Research shows that fluoride varnish is highly effective at reducing tooth decay if it is applied twice a year. Fluoride varnish should be applied at least twice yearly in all children.

How is fluoride applied?

Flouride application is done using gels or solutions which have high concentration of fluoride. The solutions are applied over teeth and left for some time. Fluoride varnish provides extra protection against tooth decay when used in addition to brushing. Fluoride varnish is a pale yellow gel that sets quickly when applied to children’s teeth using a soft brush. The varnish sets quickly, has a pleasant taste and a fruity smell.

Is there any diet restrictions after this?

Yes the child should not eat or drink anything for atleast 30 minutes after the procedure.

When should I get my child for fluoride application?

After the age of 2 years fluoride application can be started. It is important to do fluoride application till the age of 16 years atleast because it is the age for new teeth to erupt. Adults can also benefit from this procedure.

Note: Fluoride varnish won’t be applied if your child has sore areas in their mouth. Or if the child is allergic to fluoride or has asthama.
